Over the weekend 18th and 19th September 2010 the Pontypool and Blaenavon Railway will be celebrating 175 years since the foundation of the Great Western Railway, in style with a visit from the iconic City of Truro, reputedly the first steam locomotive to attain a speed of over 100mph.

At the same time the extension to Blaenavon (High Level) will be formally opened by civic dignitaries.

The weekend will feature the elegant passenger express locomotive ‘3717 City of Truro’, as well as our 1910 built GWR inspection saloon making its public debut resplendent in 1930’s Great Western Chocolate and Cream Livery. We can confirm that a Second GWR locomotive will be joining ‘Truro’ this is likely to be a tank engine, the workhorse of the Great Western, they not only hauled local passenger trains but freight services.  Keep your eye on this page for announcements as the locomotive is confirmed.

We will have demonstration freight trains, an intensive timetable, and a chance to ride behind, not only the guest locomotives but our two resident engines 71515 symbolising the importance of the coal industry to the GWR, and Devonport Dockyard No.19 commemorating the role that the dockyards played in the history of the GWR.

The two day steam extravaganza will be followed by Photographic Charters on the Monday and Tuesday, please contact  info@pbrly.co.uk  if you are interested in taking part in these exciting days.

This will be the first gala at the railway with the line extended to Blaenavon (High Level) and should prove to be a thrilling weekend with the engines attacking our steep gradients.
